History

Sandia National Laboratories was established as part of the Los Alamos Laboratory designated “Z Division” in 1945.  As everyone should know, Los Alamos is the birthplace of the atomic age.  In 1949, Western Electric took over administration of the Laboratories and in 1950 the Metal Trades Council established a bargaining unit at the Laboratories.

The Council is made up of 12 affiliated local unions, which include:  IBB Local 4; Chemical Workers Local 387; IBEW Local 1988; LIUNA Local 16; IAM Local 794; IUOE Local 953; OPEIU Local 251; UA Local 412; SMART Local 49; IBT Local 492, Insulators Local 76, and IUPAT Local 823.

Since the signing of our charter on December 17, 1948, there have been 20 different individuals that have assumed the duties of President of the Council.  They include:
